Of Christ (1 Pet. 2:21; John 13:15); of pastors to their flocks (Phil. 3:17; 2 Thess. 3:9; 1 Tim. 4:12; 1 Pet. 5:3); of the Jews as a warning (Heb. 4:11); of the prophets as suffering affliction (James 5:10).
Example
Paul tells a young pastor to “be thou an example of the believers” (1 Timothy 4:12), and Jesus, after washing his disciples’ feet, says “I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you” (John 13:15). Scripture teaches through lives as well as commands. Peter points to Christ “leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps” (1 Peter 2:21). The Bible also lets failures instruct: Paul says Israel’s stumbling “were our examples” (1 Corinthians 10:6). Good and bad lives alike become lessons. Begin with John 13, then read 1 Peter 2.
