Riches

Is wealth a blessing or a danger? Scripture says both, and takes care over each. Ecclesiastes calls it good when God gives a person the ability to enjoy it: “this is the gift of God.” But Proverbs warns that “riches certainly make themselves wings,” and asks God for neither poverty nor riches, only enough. Jesus speaks of “the deceitfulness of riches” choking the word like thorns, and when a rich man walks away sorrowful he says it is “easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle” than for the wealthy to enter God’s kingdom. Mark 10:17-27 tells the story, and Proverbs 30:7-9 gives the prayer.
