Prophets

Samuel is a boy lying down to sleep when a voice calls his name, and old Eli tells him how to answer: “Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel 3:9). Prophets in these verses are people the LORD calls and sends: Moses at the bush, Elijah, Jeremiah, Daniel. Their task is to carry his word, often to unwelcome ears. Deuteronomy sets Moses apart as the one “whom the LORD knew face to face,” and Jeremiah warns against prophets who speak “lies” from their own hearts. Hosea gives God’s own summary: “I have also spoken by the prophets.” 1 Samuel 3 is a gentle place to begin.
