Minerals

Israel’s land was described to its people as one “whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass” (Deuteronomy 8:9). Metals and stones run through the whole Bible, and a great share of these verses describe the tabernacle and the temple, built with gold, silver, bronze and precious stones. Job pictures miners going deep underground, saying “there is a vein for the silver.” Prophets use refining as a picture of God’s testing of his people: “refine them as silver is refined,” says Zechariah. Isaiah and Revelation imagine a city whose walls and gates are set with jewels. Exodus 25 to 31 lists the materials of the tabernacle.
