From the middle of May to about the middle of August the land of Palestine is dry. It is then the “drought of summer” (Gen. 31:40; Ps. 32:4), and the land suffers (Deut. 28:23: Ps. 102:4), vegetation being preserved only by the dews (Hag. 1:11). (See DEW.)
Drought
Elijah walked up to King Ahab and said, “there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.” Drought in Scripture is felt in the ground and the body: in Jeremiah 14 “the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth,” and the nobles’ little ones find the pits empty. Moses and Solomon both speak of heaven shut up as a result of the people turning from God, and Solomon’s prayer asks that, if they confess and turn back, God would hear. Jacob also speaks of a drought that consumed him in the day, simple hardship. Jeremiah 14 is the place to start.
