In the Gospels, evil spirits meet Jesus and lose. They cry out when he arrives, he commands them to leave, and the people they troubled are freed; Mark 1 and Matthew 8 show it plainly. The Old Testament is quieter. Saul is troubled by “an evil spirit from God” (1 Samuel 16:15) until David plays the harp, and Israel is rebuked for how they “sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils” (Psalm 106:37). Christians differ on how to understand possession today. Begin with Mark 1.
