Hezekiah did something bold: he “brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made” (2 Kings 18:4). The bronze serpent had once been a sign of healing in the wilderness, but by his day the people were burning incense to it. Tearing down images runs through the Old Testament. Israel is told to “quite break down their images” (Exodus 23:24), Gideon topples his father’s altar to Baal in the night, and the prophets pour scorn on gods made by hand. Christians have long disagreed about what this means for pictures and statues in worship. Judges 6 and 2 Kings 18 are good places to begin.
