Charitableness
Old English Bibles often use “charity” where newer ones say love, and it means more than giving money. Paul says that even if he gave away all he owned, without charity “it profiteth me nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:3). Then he describes it plainly: it “suffereth long, and is kind.” Jesus’ story of the Samaritan who stopped for a wounded stranger shows the same thing in action, and ends with “Go, and do thou likewise.” Giving, forgiving and patience all belong here. Paul also writes that “God loveth a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7), pointing to the spirit behind the gift.
