Amusements and Worldly Pleasures
David “danced before the LORD with all his might” (2 Samuel 6:14), while at Sinai the people “sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play” around a golden calf (Exodus 32:6). Same dancing, very different hearts. That is how the Bible treats enjoyment: Ecclesiastes lists “a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance,” while Paul warns Timothy of people who are “lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God” (2 Timothy 3:4). Scripture gives no list of approved pastimes, and Christians still disagree about particular ones. Ecclesiastes 2 is an honest place to start.
