Worldliness
A question from Jesus has not aged a day: “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Matthew 16:26). Worldliness in Scripture is less about particular activities than about where the heart rests. John writes, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world,” and Paul asks believers not to be “conformed to this world.” Ecclesiastes comes at it from the other side, with a rich and curious man concluding that chasing everything under the sun is “vanity.” Christians differ on how closely to engage the surrounding culture. The verses keep returning to what we treasure most. Ecclesiastes 2 is a candid place to begin.
