Scriptures

On the road to Emmaus, the risen Jesus walked beside two downcast disciples and, “beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27). The word “scriptures” in the New Testament means the writings Israel already treasured, and Jesus answered his tempter three times with “It is written.” Paul tells Timothy, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Bereans are praised for searching the scriptures daily to see whether Paul’s words were so (Acts 17:11).
