Salvation

What does it mean to be saved? In the Old Testament the word often means rescue from a real enemy, as when God brings Israel through the sea and out of Egypt (Exodus 14). The New Testament widens it to deliverance from sin and being made right with God. An angel tells Joseph that Jesus “shall save his people from their sins.” Paul writes that this comes as a gift by grace through faith, and Peter says there is no other name by which people must be saved. Christians differ over how God’s choosing and a person’s response fit together, but Romans 10:9-13 is a clear invitation.

From Easton's Bible Dictionary

Matthew George Easton, 1897

This word is used of the deliverance of the Israelites from the Egyptians (Ex. 14:13), and of deliverance generally from evil or danger. In the New Testament it is specially used with reference to the great deliverance from the guilt and the pollution of sin wrought out by Jesus Christ, “the great salvation” (Heb. 2:3).
