Rebellion

Rebellion is more than disobedience. It is a refusal of rightful authority, usually God’s. Korah’s revolt in the wilderness, Absalom’s plot against his father David, and Israel’s long resistance to the prophets all show it at work. Samuel’s words to King Saul are among the sternest in Scripture: “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry” (1 Samuel 15:23). Saul had done much of what he was told, just not all of it, and he kept the best of the spoil for himself. The prophets call Israel a rebellious people, yet God keeps calling them home.
