Beating
Beating appears in Scripture as law, as proverb and as persecution. Moses limits what a judge may order: “Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed”, so that a neighbour is not left shamed. Proverbs speaks of stripes for fools and of a rebuke that reaches a wise man more deeply than a hundred of them. In Acts the apostles are beaten for speaking in Jesus’ name, and Israel’s slaves in Egypt are beaten when the bricks fall short. Deuteronomy 25 is the clearest starting point.
