Wise Men

Who counts as a wise man in the Bible? Sometimes it is a royal adviser. Pharaoh sends for “all the wise men thereof” when a dream troubles him, and none can explain it; Joseph can, with God’s help (Genesis 41). Proverbs treats wisdom as something caught from company: “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise” (Proverbs 13:20). And at the birth of Jesus, “there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem” (Matthew 2:1), following a star. The text gives no names and no number for them. Read Genesis 41 and Matthew 2 side by side.

From Easton's Bible Dictionary

Matthew George Easton, 1897

Mentioned in Dan. 2:12 included three classes, (1) astrologers, (2) Chaldeans, and (3) soothsayers. The word in the original (hakamim) probably means “medicine men. In Chaldea medicine was only a branch of magic. The “wise men” of Matt. 2:7, who came from the East to Jerusalem, were magi from Persia or Arabia.
