Preparation Day
Friday, the day before the sabbath, was called the preparation, and the Gospels mention it only in the story of Jesus’ death. Luke notes that “that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on,” which explains the hurry. Because of it, the Jewish leaders asked Pilate that the bodies be taken down before the sabbath began, and Jesus was laid in a nearby tomb “because of the Jews’ preparation day.” John adds that this preparation fell during the passover. The next day, the chief priests and Pharisees went to Pilate again. Read John 19 from the verse where Jesus is condemned to his burial.
