a quoin or cornerstone, of great importance in binding together the sides of a building. The phrase "corner-stone" is sometimes used to denote any principal person, as the princes of Egypt, (Isaiah 19:13) and is thus applied to our Lord. (Isaiah 28:16; Matthew 21:42; 1 Peter 2:6,7)
Cornerstone
Builders threw out a stone, and it became the one that holds the corner. Psalm 118 says it first: “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner” (Psalm 118:22). Jesus quotes it about himself in three of the Gospels, and Peter does the same before the rulers in Acts 4:11. Isaiah speaks of a tried stone laid in Zion as a sure foundation, and Paul says the household of God is built on the apostles and prophets, with Jesus himself as the chief corner stone (Ephesians 2:20). The picture is about what everything else depends on, and about a rejected one becoming the one that bears the weight.
