is extremely common in the East from many causes. Blind beggars figure repeatedly in the New Testament (Matthew 12:22) and "opening the eyes of the blind" is mentioned in prophecy as a peculiar attribute of the Messiah. (Isaiah 29:18; 42:7) etc. The Jews were specially charged to treat the blind with compassion and care. (Leviticus 19:14; 27:18) Blindness willfully inflicted for political or other purposes is alluded to in Scripture. (1 Samuel 11:2; Jeremiah 39:7)
Blindness
After healing a man born blind, Jesus says he has come “that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind” (John 9:39). Here blindness is more than a loss of sight. Paul says the unbelieving have minds that are blinded (2 Corinthians 4:4) and an understanding darkened “because of the blindness of their heart” (Ephesians 4:18), and John says that hating a brother leaves a person walking in darkness. Scripture also records physical blindness with compassion, and speaks of sight restored. Christians read the hardening of some hearts in different ways, but the aim throughout is the same: eyes opened.
