Zarah
A midwife tied a scarlet thread on a newborn’s hand, but his twin brother came out first, and the thread-wearer was named Zarah (spelled Zerah in most later lists). He and Pharez were the sons of Judah and Tamar. Zerah’s own sons are listed in Chronicles: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol and Dara. His family, the Zarhites, were counted with Judah’s tribe in the wilderness census, and Nehemiah later names a man of Zerah’s line who served “at the king’s hand in all matters concerning the people.” Beyond a birth story and some names, Scripture says little, but it keeps the family on record. Genesis 38 is where it begins.
