Kittim
Far across the sea lay Kittim, which the KJV spells Chittim. It is never described, only seen from a distance by those who feared it. Balaam foresees that “ships shall come from the coast of Chittim” (Numbers 24:24). Isaiah’s word against Tyre says news of its fall comes “from the land of Chittim” (Isaiah 23:1), and Daniel 11:30 speaks of ships of Chittim moving against a king. In each place the name stands for a western sea power whose arrival changes the fortunes of nations. Isaiah 23 is a good chapter to read to see the name in context.
