Guile
The men who plotted against Jesus “consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him” (Matthew 26:4). That is guile: cleverness used to hide what is really going on. Scripture sets it against a plain mouth. Of the suffering servant Isaiah says there was not “any deceit in his mouth” (Isaiah 53:9), and the psalmist asks who may stand in God’s holy place, answering with the one who has “clean hands, and a pure heart.” Another psalm describes the wicked, whose mouth is “full of cursing and deceit and fraud.” Paul says he has refused “craftiness” in preaching (2 Corinthians 4:2). Psalm 10 shows deceit at its worst.
