Girgashites

The Girgashites are one of the peoples who lived in Canaan before Israel arrived, and they are named only in lists. God tells Abraham in Genesis 15 that his descendants will receive the land of the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites. Deuteronomy 7:1 counts “seven nations greater and mightier” than Israel, and Joshua uses the same names when he says the living God will drive them out. We are told nothing else about this people, not a king or a city. They are a reminder that the promise to Abraham was given into a land already full of neighbors.
