Conceit
Is anyone harder to help than a person already sure of being right? Proverbs thinks not: “Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him” (Proverbs 26:12). Paul gives the same advice to the church in Rome: “Be not wise in your own conceits” (Romans 12:16). Kings such as Nebuchadnezzar and the Assyrian rulers in Isaiah boast of what their own hands have done, and are brought low. Jesus tells of a Pharisee praying about his own goodness beside a tax collector who asks for mercy, and says “he that humbleth himself shall be exalted” (Luke 18:14).
