Bushel

A bushel was a household measuring vessel, and Jesus makes it part of one of his plainest sayings. “Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.” Mark and Luke record the same picture. Nobody lights a lamp so that it can be hidden, he says, and the lamp is set up where those who come in can see. Matthew places the saying in the Sermon on the Mount, so Matthew 5:15 is the natural place to start.
