Arrogance

Hannah’s prayer of thanks includes a plain warning: “Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed” (1 Samuel 2:3). Arrogance is pride that speaks, the boast and the swagger. Proverbs lists it among what the LORD hates: “pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth.” Jeremiah describes Moab, whose pride showed in “his loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.” Mary’s song looks the other way, saying God “hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts” (Luke 1:51).
