Abiezer was a clan of Manasseh, named in Numbers and Joshua among the families that received land. Its best-known son is Gideon. When “the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon,” he blew a trumpet, and the people of Abiezer rallied behind him. Two other men carry the name in the lists of David’s day: Abiezer of Anathoth, among his mighty men, and an Abiezer of Benjamin as captain over a month’s service in the army. The verses do not say much more. They show a name passed down through families, and a small tribe that gathered to a leader when God moved him.

There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh by their families; for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph by their families.
