Technicalities
Not every accusation in the Gospels is about wrongdoing. Several times Pharisees watch Jesus and his disciples over what the Sabbath allows. They notice hungry disciples picking grain and say they do “that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.” They ask whether it is lawful to heal a man with a withered hand, and Luke says they watched Jesus “that they might find an accusation against him.” The passages show the stress falling on the rule, while a man in need stands waiting. Matthew 12 and Luke 6 tell these scenes, and Jesus answers in both.
