Suicide

Scripture mentions a person taking his own life only a few times, and each time it simply tells what happened. Wounded and afraid of capture, King Saul asked his armourbearer to “thrust me through therewith”; when the man refused, “Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.” After betraying Jesus, Judas “went and hanged himself.” The narrators add no verdict about either man. Some other verses Nave’s lists here, such as the devil’s challenge to “cast thyself down”, are not about this at all. Anyone carrying heavy thoughts of their own should speak today with someone they trust, or a local crisis line. For the accounts themselves, read 1 Samuel 31 and Matthew 27.

1 Samuel 31:4

Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

1 Samuel 31:5

And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.
