Saruch

One man, two spellings. Genesis 11 says “Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug,” and that Serug lived thirty years and begat Nahor. Luke 3:35 runs the same names in reverse order, as part of the ancestry of Jesus, and spells them as Ragau and Saruch: “the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau.” Saruch is the Greek form of the older Hebrew name. Nothing is told about him beyond his place in the line, and that is the point of a list like this: it joins Abram’s distant ancestors, step by step, to the generations that follow.
