Steady pictures in Scripture often come from small things, and the nail is one of them. Craftsmen in Isaiah 41 fasten an idol “with nails, that it should not be moved.” In Isaiah 22 the LORD says of a chosen servant, “I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place,” though a few verses later the nail gives way and the burden hanging on it falls. Ezra uses the same word for a small, secure foothold, “a nail in his holy place,” given to a remnant in hard times. Zechariah 10:4 lists the nail with the corner and the battle bow. Start with Isaiah 22:23-25.

And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.
Isaiah
And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father's house.
In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for the LORD hath spoken it.
So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith, and he that smootheth with the hammer him that smote the anvil, saying, It is ready for the sodering: and he fastened it with nails, that it should not be moved.
