People, Common
Ordinary crowds keep reacting to Jesus in the same way, with wonder. When he had “ended these sayings,” the people were astonished at his teaching. After a man who could not speak was freed, the multitudes said, “It was never so seen in Israel.” In his own country, hearers asked, “Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?” In Matthew and Mark, that wonder at home turns quickly into offence. These verses show how everyday listeners met him, and how amazement is not always the same as belief. Read Mark 6:1-6 to see both.
