Manure
Few topics sound humbler. The Bible speaks of dung without embarrassment, and in each case it has a use. In one of Jesus’ parables a gardener asks the owner to leave a fruitless fig tree for another year while he digs around it and fertilizes it, and the gardener’s patience is the point. Jesus also says that salt which has lost its savour is no good “for the land, nor yet for the dunghill,” so it gets thrown out. Isaiah says Moab will be trodden down like straw on the dunghill. Isaiah
For in this mountain shall the hand of the LORD rest, and Moab shall be trodden down under him, even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill.
Luke
And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:
Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
