Landmarks

A boundary stone is a plain thing, yet the Bible treats moving one as serious. Proverbs 22 says, “Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.” Deuteronomy 27 pairs it with a curse, and Proverbs 23 ties the warning to the fields of the fatherless, who had no one to defend their land. Hosea 5 says Judah’s princes were “like them that remove the bound.” Behind each verse is the same worry: that the strong will quietly take from the weak. Deuteronomy 19 is a good place to start reading.
