(1.) Son of Eliezer, in the genealogy of Christ. (Luke 3:29)
(2.) One of the Lord’s brethren. (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3)
(3.) Joses Barnabas. (Acts 4:36) [BARNABAS]
The name Joses turns up in more than one household. In Nazareth, neighbors ask, “Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?” (Matthew 13:55). At the crucifixion a Mary is named as the mother of James and Joses, watching among the women. In Acts, a Levite from Cyprus named Joses is given the surname Barnabas by the apostles, which is explained as “The son of consolation” (Acts 4:36). It was evidently a common name, so each verse is worth reading for its own person. Acts 4:36-37 is a short, warm place to start.
