Descent. (1.) The fourth antediluvian patriarch in descent from Seth (Gen. 5:15-20; Luke 3:37), the father of Enoch; called Jered in 1 Chr. 1:2.
(2.) A son of Ezra probably (1 Chr. 4:18).
Jared sits in the long family line from Adam to Noah. Genesis 5 says he lived “nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died,” and that he fathered Enoch, the man who walked with God. Each entry in this list ends the same way, with a life lived and a death. Luke 3 names Jared again when it traces the ancestors of Jesus back toward the beginning. We are told little about the man himself, only that he belonged to a chain of fathers and sons. Genesis 5 is the place to read it.
