Deception
The first deception in the Bible takes only a few words. The serpent asks Eve whether God really said what she remembered, and afterward she admits, “The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat” (Genesis 3:13). From there the Bible tells of Jacob wearing his brother’s clothes to win a blessing, and of Joseph’s brothers showing their father a bloodied coat. It also warns about being fooled. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jeremiah 17:9), and Jesus says, “Take heed that no man deceive you” (Matthew 24:4). Deceit is not only done to us; the Bible is frank that we can deceive ourselves.
