An adviser (Prov. 11:14; 15:22), a king’s state counsellor (2 Sam. 15:12). Used once of the Messiah (Isa. 9:6). In Mark 15:43, Luke 23:50, the word probably means a member of the Jewish Sanhedrim.
Counsellor
Counsellor is both a job and a name. First Chronicles 27 says “Ahithophel was the king’s counsellor.” Mark 15 introduces Joseph of Arimathaea, “an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God,” who “went in boldly unto Pilate” and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Isaiah 9:6 gives a promised child a name: “Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Human advisers can be wise or ruined by bad advice, and Isaiah points to a better one. Isaiah 9:2 to 7 is worth reading in full.
