Ashbel

Some figures in Scripture appear only in a list. Ashbel is one of the sons of Benjamin, named among those who went down into Egypt with Jacob’s family. When Israel is counted again in the wilderness, he is remembered as the head of a family, the Ashbelites, in the tribe of Benjamin. First Chronicles repeats the line, saying that Benjamin begat Bela his firstborn and “Ashbel the second.” That is nearly everything the verses tell us. They are a reminder that the tribes grew from real households with real names, and that each household was counted when the nation was numbered. Numbers 26 is the best place to see how the tribes were reckoned.
