Ahitub is a name carried by priests across generations. In 1 Samuel 14:3 his son Ahiah wears the ephod at Shiloh, a grandson of Eli’s line. In 2 Samuel 8:17 “Zadok the son of Ahitub” serves as priest under David. And in 1 Chronicles 9:11 a later Azariah is called “the ruler of the house of God”, with Ahitub among his fathers. These verses may point to more than one man of the same name, and the text does not settle it. What they show is a thread of priestly service running from Shiloh to the temple. A good place to begin is 2 Samuel 8:15-18, which lists David’s officers.

Brother of goodness = good. (1.) The son of Phinehas. On the death of his grandfather Eli he succeeded to the office of high priest, and was himself succeeded by his son Ahijah (1 Sam. 14:3; 22:9, 11, 12, 20).
(2.) The father of Zadok, who was made high priest by Saul after the extermination of the family of Ahimelech (1 Chr. 6:7, 8; 2 Sam. 8:17).
