Suffering

Job sits in ashes, having lost his children, his wealth and his health, and his friends keep offering explanations. Scripture refuses to hurry past pain. Whole books are given to it: Job, Lamentations, and many psalms that complain honestly to God. Jesus suffers unjustly too, so God is not distant from it. Paul writes that “the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18). The Bible does not give one tidy reason for every hardship. Psalm 22 and Job 38-42 are good places to sit.
