Appointed; a substitute, the third son of Adam and Eve (Gen. 4:25; 5:3). His mother gave him this name, “for God,” said she, “hath appointed me [i.e., compensated me with] another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.”
Seth
After Cain killed Abel, Adam and Eve had another son. Eve named him Seth, saying that God “hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel.” Genesis 5:3 notes that Adam’s son was born “in his own likeness, after his image.” Of Seth’s own son Enos, Genesis says, “then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.” Seth lived nine hundred and twelve years, and the Chronicles list spells his name Sheth. He appears only briefly, yet he carries the family line forward from the first parents. A good place to start is Genesis 4:25-26, then chapter 5.
