What does it sound like when a whole people answers together? In Deuteronomy 27 the Levites speak aloud, one wrong at a time, and after each one all the people say Amen. The list is plain and sobering: making an idol, scorning a father or mother, moving a neighbour’s boundary stone, misleading the blind, bending justice against the stranger, the fatherless and the widow, and striking a neighbour “secretly”. Some wrongs named there are ones no court would ever see. The last curse falls on anyone who does not keep all the words of the law. Read Deuteronomy 27:14-26 slowly, imagining the Amens.
