Perfume
“Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart,” says Proverbs 27:9, and the verse goes on to compare that pleasure to the sweetness of a friend’s honest counsel. Perfume in Scripture is a small, everyday gladness. In the Song of Solomon a procession comes up out of the wilderness “perfumed with myrrh and frankincense,” and in Exodus 30 Aaron burns sweet incense on the altar each morning. A few verses are about scent itself, and a few only mention it in passing. If you want one verse to start with, Proverbs 27:9 is the clearest, and it is short enough to remember.
