Pain
Scripture does not hurry past pain. Job is the book that stays with it longest: his flesh aches, his bones are pierced in the night, and he lies on his bed “chastened also with pain.” Lamentations 3 speaks of being surrounded with bitterness and hardship, and Revelation 16 describes people gnawing their tongues in agony. These passages describe suffering honestly, in the body and in the soul, without rushing to tidy it. For readers in hard places, there is some company in the fact that the Bible’s own voices say plainly how much it hurts.

Job
But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.
By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat.
He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:
