Mulberry Tree

David had just beaten the Philistines once, and they came back in force. This time he asked the LORD what to do and was told not to charge straight ahead. He was to circle behind them and wait near the mulberry trees. When David heard “the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees,” that was his signal to move, because the LORD had gone out before him. The trees mark the moment in 2 Samuel 5 when waiting patiently mattered as much as fighting, and God set the timing.
