Medes
The Medes first appear as a place where captives were sent: when Assyria took Samaria, it settled Israel’s people in “the cities of the Medes.” Later they rise to power. In Babylon, Daniel hears the writing on the wall, “Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians,” and that night “Darius the Median took the kingdom.” Daniel serves under him, and the lions’ den follows. Scripture treats them as a people God uses in the history of kings and nations. Read Daniel 5, then Daniel 6, to see the change of rule from inside.

2 Kings
In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.
Daniel
PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.
In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;
Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him.
