Joktan

Genesis 10 follows the families that spread out after the flood, and Joktan is one of them. He was the brother of Peleg, in whose days “the earth was divided.” Joktan had thirteen sons, among them Almodad, Ophir, Havilah and Jobab, and the chapter counts them as the beginnings of peoples in the east. The same list appears again in 1 Chronicles 1. Little is told about Joktan himself; he matters as one branch of the great family tree. Genesis 10 shows where he fits among the nations.

Genesis 10:25

And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,

And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan.

Little, the second of the two sons of Eber (Gen. 10:25; 1 Chr. 1:19). There is an Arab tradition that Joktan (Arab. Kahtan) was the progenitor of all the purest tribes of Central and Southern Arabia.
