Gathered by the people, (Josh. 19:11; 21:34), a city “of Carmel” (12:22), i.e., on Carmel, allotted with its suburbs to the Merarite Levites. It is the modern Tell Kaimon, about 12 miles south-west of Nazareth, on the south of the river Kishon.
Jokneam
Jokneam is a city of Carmel that turns up in a few quiet lists. Joshua 12:22 counts “the king of Jokneam of Carmel” among the kings Israel defeated, one name in a long roll call of victories. In Joshua 19:11 the border of Zebulun’s land “reached to the river that is before Jokneam”, which tells us the town sat near a stream. A related name, Jokmeam, is among the cities given to the Levites in 1 Chronicles 6:68. Nothing dramatic happens here. Jokneam simply marks a spot on the map, and the text treats each such place as part of the land God gave.
