Hamutal

A king’s mother is often named in the books of Kings, and Hamutal is named twice for two different sons. She was the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. Her son Jehoahaz began to reign at twenty-three and held the throne only three months in Jerusalem. Her son Zedekiah began at twenty-one and reigned eleven years, the last king of Judah before the city fell. The same line about Zedekiah’s mother is repeated in Jeremiah 52. These short notes remind a reader that the royal stories were also family stories, with a mother behind each throne.
