Isa. 7:4, Amos 4:11, Zech. 3:2, denotes the burnt end of a stick (Heb. ‘ud); in Judg. 15:4, a lamp or torch, a flambeau (Heb. lappid); in Prov. 26:18 (comp. Eph. 6:16), burning darts or arrows (Heb. zikkim).
Firebrand
A firebrand is a burning stick, and Scripture uses it in two ways. In Proverbs it is something dangerous: “As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death.” In Amos and Zechariah it is something rescued. God says Israel was “as a firebrand plucked out of the burning,” yet adds, “have ye not returned unto me.” In Zechariah 3 the LORD asks, “is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?” Read Zechariah 3:1-2 to see who is being pulled from the flames.
